In May 2025, scientists at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) achieved a feat that has captivated humanity for centuries: the transmutation of lead into gold. In this process, photons emitted during the near-collision excite the lead nuclei, causing them to eject three protons and transform into gold nuclei.

During Run 2 of the LHC (2015–2018), approximately 86 billion gold nuclei were produced, amounting to a mere 29 picograms (2.9 × 10^-11 grams) of gold that existed for only fractions of a second before decaying.
